BIA BEAUTY SKIN SUPERFOOD

If your skin is in poor shape, try this little multi-tasker. Using 100% natural ingredients, we found it very soothing on problem skin. It was easily absorbed, with no greasy excess.
A little goes a long way - it was best used at night when the skin has a chance to enjoy the benefits without being smothered in make-up.
The packaging is great, a very light, airless hygienic pump rules out germs from dipping fingers - and of course, prolongs its shelf life.
Fits nicely into a small make-up bag.
Stocked in selected pharmacies, health-food stores, gift stores and beauty salons nationwide; online at www.biabeauty.com

Natural Skin Repair Cream, Skin Superfood

The smell is beautiful and fresh. My skin was badly in need of TLC due to the recent sudden change in weather. The first night I applied the cream to my finger tips and rubbed it into my skin (ladies make sure you are including your neck!) just before bed. I was impressed that it dried in quite quickly but also a bit skeptical because I felt at that point if it had dried in, it had done all it was going to do for my skin. How wrong could I be? When I woke in the morning there was a noticeable difference in my skin, it felt so soft and nourished. I honestly couldn't wait to apply it again that night. I even found myself a couple of evenings when I was at home taking off my make-up long before bed so I could apply it to my face.

Out of interest due to the "Skin Repair" element and in the name of the product research of course.....I tried it on my feet as when the winter comes so do the shoes, socks and dry feet! I honestly couldn't believe the next morning my feet were definitely noticeably softer. I really loved this product and I'll be using it from here on in.

Christmas 2013: Irish made gifts for Beauty Lovers

With all the huge companies pushing Christmas ads down our throats at this time of year, it'd be easy to think there's no alternative but to buy from 'The Big Boys'. The well known high street chains, the massive international beauty companies, online clothing giants; they're all rolling out their special Christmas 'offers' and gift sets hoping to make a sale.

I don't think there's anything a miss in buying from this lot; I know I do it enough throughout the rest of the year and probably will send some of my Christmas shopping budget their way but something I really enjoy doing, especially at this time of year, is buying from smaller, independent retailers. There's something really lovely about knowing that not only have you found a nice pressie for someone, but also that your purchase has helped to support a real person and their business aspirations, rather than a faceless selling giant.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been keeping my eye out for Irish companies who produce perfect gifts for beauty lovers. Two main reasons for this: not only is it good to support home grown business but also, I like to send 'local to me' products to my family in England so they can experience something a bit different to the same old products you can buy pretty much anywhere.

Bia Beauty, founded by Herbal Science graduate Tracey Ryan, is based in Cork and produce high quality skincare products based on natural food based ingredients. On first impression, you might think this sounds a bit clumsy but there's no sign of egg blackhead remover masks here. Instead there's nut and seed oils, fruit infusions, herbs and spices, cocoa butter and avocado butter. Sounds pretty luxurious to me.

My choice of gift set would be the Feed Your Face set which contains an orange and grapefruit exfoliator and cleanser, a mandarin moisturiser, an eye gel and Lime Pie lip balm.

The fact that I can order online and have the gifts delivered straight to the UK also saves a lot of faff and it only costs €5.

GOING AU NATUREL

"No artificial flavours, colours or preservatives" is a well-recognised label on many food products. But while we are well versed in the disadvantages of consuming unnecessary additives, the movement towards using additive-free products externally is taking slightly longer to catch on.

Advocates of the 'No-poo' movement may be met with strange looks upon explaining the method to strangers - for those unaware of this strange-sounding ideology, it involves abstaining from the use of conventional chemical-laden shampoos and allowing your natural locks to 'self-regulate'. And its questionable name notwithstanding, its practitioners may just be onto something.

The use of natural hair and skincare products is not only better for the environment; it can also be better for your health. Coming into winter, many people suffer from dry, itchy skin, which can often be exacerbated by the harsh chemicals found in many hair and skincare products. If you don't want to go completely 'No-poo' (okay, it's beginning to sound ridiculous), that doesn't mean you're out of additive-free options.

Many Irish-based companies are now offering all-natural beauty products, favouring plant-based emulsifiers and preservatives over the chemical kind. One such company is Cork-based Bia Beauty (www.biabeauty.com), which provides skincare products suitable for all sages and skin-types. Products including moisturisers, lip balms, exfoliants and baby creams - all made from 100% natural ingredients.

Superfood for your skin

Bia Beauty's Skin Superfood is a must-have for your bathroom cabinet and suitcase as this multi-tasker is suitable to use on everything from bites and burns to dry skin and rashes as well as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. The entrepreneur behind Bia Beauty, Tracey Ryan describes how she got the idea for her beauty business. "While doing a degree in Herbal Science we were asked to make and sell a herb-based product as part of an innovation module. I was already making moisturisers for my family so I started to sell them at local farmers markets. The reaction was amazing. I kept selling out and people kept calling me looking for more! The name Bia - the Irish word for food, is very apt, the ingredients I was using were 100% natural and food based, like nut and seed oils, herbs, fruit etc. I used to say to my husband - I'm literally feeding your skin - and that's where our name and tagline "feed your skin" came from."

Tracey and her team produce skincare products that are 100% natural which include moisturisers, hand cream, body and facial exfoliants, body butter and lip balms, each combining food and skin-care ingredients such as nut and seed oils, fruits, herbs, spices, cocoa butter, and avocado butter. High quality natural oils such as sweet almond, evening primrose, and thistle oil are used which penetrate deep into the skin providing anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and intensive moisturising action. Tracey is most proud of her Detox Body Scrub. "It's a rich creamy scrub packed full of detoxifying essential oils like grapefruit, lemon, rosemary, ginger, fennel, juniper and black pepper. I use crushed apricot kernel grains as the exfoliant and they give a super scrub, it leaves your skin silky soft and moisturised, perfect for applying fake tan or showing off bare legs! And I love using it myself too." Bia Beauty's entire range of products is available online at www.biabeauty.com, and in some pharmacies, health food stores, gift shops and beauty salons.

Tracey is the top 'mumtrepreneur'

With a three year old son, Feidhlim, and a two year old business, Tracey Ryan's outstanding ability in combining her roles as a mum, and a successful entrepreneur, has earned her the title Mumtrepreneur of the Year 2013, as voted by readers of Mums & Tots maternity magazine.

The enterprising Cork woman established her online and retail business, Bia Beauty, in 2011, producing luxurious skincare products that are completely natural and highly effective.

Having studied horticulture, and gained an honours degree in Herbal Science at CIT, Tracey committed her life savings and got support from her local enterprise board in order to set-up her beauty business, producing a skincare range designed to nourish the skin naturally.

"While pregnant, I, like most new mums-to-be became really concerned about what I was putting into and onto my body. I began to make all the families skin care and toiletries; shampoos, nappy cream, moisturisers etc," said Tracey.

"I loved the idea of combining food and skin care, to me it was obvious. The ingredients I was using were food; nut and seed oils, fruits, herbs, spices, cocoa butter, avocado butter. I was literally feeding our skin!"

Natural

One of the top ones I tried was from new brand, Bia Beauty. Stop The Clock Eye Gel £14.50/€16.95 is made from rose, myrrh and immortelle essential oils, which are soothing, combined with arnica oil and aloe vera to produce a cooling and healing eye gel to instantly brighten tired eyes. What I love about this product is the natural aspect of it - it's just packed with wonderfully natural ingredients and in these days , when we are all so conscious of what we eat, it's also important that the lotions and potions we put on our skin are truly nourishing too.

Review! Bia Beauty Skin Superfood

I have reviewed a couple of Bia Beauty products in the past, and really loved them, but, the Skin Superfood is by far my favourite product so far from the brand. This is in fact my second bottle of Skin Superfood. I bought my first a few months back when I was suffering with a horrible bout of dermatitis. Tracey, the owner of Bia Beauty recommended this to me,claiming she developed the cream to combat her own dermatitis. I quickly got myself down to Avoca in Malahide and picked up a bottle.

I started off using Skin Superfood as a handcream, lashing it on throughout the day. It coated my irritated and itchy skin like a comforting pair of gloves. When my dermatitis cleared up I started using it EVERYWHERE, like, the dry skin on the tops of my arms, on my face at night and my teenage daughter now uses it to calm her acne when she has a particularly bad breakout.

Bia Beauty Detox Body Scrub

I love discovering new products and brands and I find it even more exciting when they’re Irish, as I know they can’t have been made too far away! Bia Beauty is a gorgeous Irish skin and bodycare brand, the brainchild of Tracey in Cork. She studied Herbal Science and her development of natural beauty products was born from this. All the products she makes are totally natural and made in Cork.

You can buy her products online here or where I spotted them, in Avoca. I was tempted to buy everything in the range but decided to be sensible. I had just run out of my body scrub so I decided I’d try the Detox Body Scrub to keep scaly limbs at bay. The first thing that hits you about the scrub is that it smells amazingly fresh. It contains lemon, grapefruit, juniper, rosemary, fennel, ginger and black pepper essential oils, I find the lemony smell really uplifting. It also contains castor and sweet almond oils and the scrubby bit comes from the apricot kernel grains.

Marketing your Startup

Tracey Ryan has a background in herbal science as a result of her love of plants and foraging. As part of an Innovation project, she began selling 100% natural body moisturizer at farmers markets and Bia Beauty took off. Specialising in natural products from plants, nuts, fruit and vegetables, its motto is to 'combine food and skin care' so that you are literally feeding your skin. The results have been gratifying, as Bia Beauty this year came second in the (Angel VC-backed) Startup Awards. So how did Tracey go from plant lover to savvy small entrepreneur with PR and marketing skills? Here she gives us her 5 tips -

Persist with social media, it really does work Facebook has been vital to us in building up our loyal fan base, getting our “feed your skin” message out and growing our brand online. Make sure to look after your fans, they are your brand ambassadors. We run a “fan of the week” competition every week, we give skin care advice and tips and post behind the scene photos. Our fans feel part of Bia Beauty and if we ask them to share our posts they do – instant free publicity!

Become the “go-to person” or “guru” in your area I’ve put it out there that I have knowledge and experience in natural skin care and herbs and so I’ve been called on for radio interviews and to be the “skin care expert” for a maternity magazine.

BIA BEAUTY

So in the past few years a lot of good Irish beauty brands have emerged onto the market. Today’s post is a review of some products from another one of these good Irish beauty brands, Bia Beauty. I hadn't heard much about Bia Beauty but when I was asked if I wanted to try some products for review, I of course said yes. I love supporting Irish companies and this company is very local to me. Bia Beauty is the brainchild of Tracey Ryan and it is made right here in Cork. All the ingredients of Bia Beauty products are 100% natural and are simple food ingredients, which you will see from my reviews. Let’s see what I have to review.

First up is the Detox Body Scrub (€19.95). Now to start off since I was sent this for review they have changed the packaging to a bottle and pump system, which I think is much better. This Detox Body Scrub is jam-packed with lots of lovely ingredients. It contains castor oil and sweet almond oil to moisturise, apricot kernel grains and black pepper for a good scrub and lemon, grapefruit, juniper, rosemary, fennel and ginger for its unique scent.

I have to say when I first smelled this scrub I was very intrigued. The combination of sweet almond oil mixed with some fresh citrus scents and pepper really surprised me. I honestly didn't think it would work but it really does. It smells super fresh and just very uplifting. The consistency of the scrub is just perfect for me too. It’s very grainy but the grains are small so no huge chunks that can be harsh or scratch your skin. It works really well to give your skin a good invigorating scrub but without been too drying. This is definitely a winner of a product for me.

Bia agus Deoch

The sign you’ll see over most public houses. Places I’ve been avoiding for a number of weeks.  In the past two months I’ve stepped up my health kick and went into a total detox, drinking at least 5 litres of water for 3 weeks, two of those with green tea and Berocca. The positive effects are fantastic but with a minor few negatives.

Besides the bloating and swelling for carrying around a bladder full of fluid and the urgent need to be near a bathroom at all times, I also suffered form a slight outbreak of dermatitis on my hands. Running to the loo over twice as much as I used to and having being brought up a good clean catholic girl, I was also washing my hands twice as much as usual. Queue breakouts usually associated with hairdressers, doctors, nurses and those misfortunate enough to suffer from hyper hygiene. Yes you can clean yourself too much. I’m not recommending not washing your hands after you complete your business in the powder room but perhaps be prepared if you’re embarking on a detox!

I didn’t think this particular breakout was too bad until I had my nails done and Angelica in her broken English informed me my cuticles were in the worst shape she’d ever seen! Never mind my hands. My explanation fell on deaf ears or was lost in translation somehow. I arrived home that evening and had a visit from my sister.  Out of pure luck, cosmic alignment or sisterly institution, she had a gift for me. A bottle of Bia Beauty’s Skin Food. On researching products for our dad for Father’s Day (psoriasis covering a lot of his body) she had read that this had positive results for stubborn skin ailments.

I had seen Bia (Irish for food) everywhere as of late and like everything else it was on my list of products to try. Started here in Cork and made with natural ingredients and plant based extracts its arrival is just in time for the upsurge of the trendiness of organic household products, cleaning agents and beauty care. It’s always been popular but recently is super chic. My sister with a background is science is even more clued in and claimed this was one of the better ones. It’s not ridiculously over priced either, considering it’s homemade. Stick an organic, homemade, pure or ethically sourced label on something and it doubles the cost. Rightly so if it is genuinely all of the above but there are some that have just jumped on the band wagon.

Two pumps of this little bottle of magic and my hands were instantly relieved of their tightness. By the next morning, they looked much better and any cracks and splits were starting to repair them selves. A week later and they’re all but healed. Even though I’m still running to the loo every second, this Bia Potion is keeping it at bay.

Sumptuous Scrub

After returning from my holidays I’ve been doing everything I can to keep my skin smooth, perfectly polished and flake free so that I can maintain my tan as long as possible. One of my top tips to perfect preening and prepping is exfoliation; without it you’re simply wasting your luxurious moisturizer on dead skin. If you’re naturally pale and planning on using fake tan this Summer then this golden rule also applies to avoid unsightly patches, and thankfully Bia Beauty have all areas covered.

Bia Beauty’s award winning Detox Body Scrub is the perfect body exfoliant to eradicate dry, dead skin cells and product build up leaving skin silky smooth and ready for the tanning process. Detox Body Scrub was also the only Irish brand to win an Irish Tatler Beauty Award as featured in their May issue.

Bia Beauty’s Detox Body Scrub is a deeply detoxifying scrub combining ultra cleansing castor oil with sweet almond oil and apricot kernel grains for a really satisfying scrub. The blend of lemon, grapefruit, juniper, rosemary, fennel, ginger and black pepper essential oils make this scrub uplifting, detoxifying and stimulating and great for treating cellulite.

Local is Lovely: Bia Beauty Detox Body Scrub

Have you heard of Bia Beauty? Have you? If you have read any Irish Publication that has a beauty section, you should have heard of this Cork based company that hand makes their natural beauty & body products. And the Detox Body Scrub is a flipping awesome product.

While the wee samples I received to try were in little pots, the Product actually comes in a very handy 250ml  bottle equipped with a pump dispenser.

A Pump! So no more scraping product out of a jar and having to try to put the lid back on the jar with slippy-gritty hands!!! No more watered down product cos you accidentally get water in the jar!!!

The Detox Body Scrub is a lovely scrubby scrub, combining castor oil with sweet almond oil and apricot kernel grains for a properly satisfying scrub. Lemon, grapefruit, juniper, rosemary, fennel, ginger and black pepper essential oils give an uplifting fragrance while also detoxifying and stimulating the skin

Bia Beauty Detox Scrub

Last week, I shared my thoughts on Bia Beautys Orange and Grapefruit Facial Exfoliant and Cleanser and this week I am sharing my thought on another lovely from Bia Beauty, their award winning detox body scrub.

This lovely combines castor oil with sweet almond oil and apricot kernals to exfoliatiate and detoxify the skin. Added to these, is a blend of lemon, grapefruit, juniper, rosemary, ginger, fennel and black pepper essential oils to create an incredible uplifting scent. While the Orange and Grapefruit Cleanser features a citrus scent, the detox scrub has a spicier scent, most noticeably of ginger.

For me, the smell is gorgeous and definitely lifts my spirits.

Bia Beauty Orange and Grapefruit Facial Exfoliant and Cleanser

About a month ago, I was lucky to be sent a couple of products from Bia Beauty . I was super excited when they arrived because I've wanted to try these handmade products for ages. First up, I wanted to share the Orange and Grapefruit Facial Exfoliant and Cleanser.

This gentle and invigorating cleanser features a heavely orange and grapefruit scent. I seriously can't stop smelling the jar everytime I pass it. It smells like freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice.  Yum!!  There are also tiny jojoba grains that remove dead skin cells and brighten the complexion without it being harsh.

They say we say - Bia Beauty Orange & Grapefruit Facial Exfoliant and Cleanser, RRP €16.95

They Say: A facial exfoliant needs to be powerful yet gentle and it needs to cleanse and nourish the skin rather than dry it out. We’ve blended castor and thistle oil which are excellent at cleansing and extracting impurities with natural jojoba grains. These grains are really effective at removing dead skin cells and brightening the complexion without being too abrasive. We’ve combined these with orange blossom waterand orange and grapefruit essential oils to create an invigorating and delicious smelling exfoliant and cleanser. There’s no need for a separate cleanser and exfoliant this multi-tasking product will save your time and your skin!

We Say: This Cork-made product ticks all the boxes. It smells like summer, and is perfect for waking you up in the morning. It's an unusual scrub in that the grains are not too big and thus it's not too harsh on the skin, and it really doesn't dry you out, which we think is very big deal. One word of caution - like most scrubs, it wasn't suitable for one of our testers' very sensitive skin - but for everyone else, it's definitely a winner! Bia Beauty Orange & Grapefruit Exfoliant & Cleanser

Yet another Irish skin care brand, Bia Beauty. I’m telling ye I can’t keep up with all these great Irish businesses popping up :) It’s great!!

A little about Bia Beauty: Founded by Herbal Scientist Tracey Ryan in Cork all Bia Beauty products are 100% natural and any emulsifiers and preservatives used are plant-based. Tracey does not test anything on animals either.
The tagline for Bia Beauty is ”Feed your skin” isn’t that beautiful? Your skin absorbs a whopping 60% of what you put on your skin so it really is best that the ingredients are natural!

I was lucky enough to get to try out her Orange & Grapefruit Cleanser & Exfoliator.

As you can imagine this has a lovely refreshing fruity smell. It contains castor and thistle oil which are great for cleansing and extracting impurities and one of my faves jojoba but in the form of tiny grains.
I have to say I do prefer my grains in my exfoliator to be bigger/more rough as I feel they gets rid of more dead skin but this does a surprisingly great job. I like that it removes all your makeup too as well as eye makeup (it doesn’t seem to sting my eyes or anything) My skin also feels very nourished and soft afterwards.

Summer Makeover

The weather may not be up to much so far this summer but there are plenty of beauty and skincare products to enjoy and take your mind of the drizzle!
Cork based producer Tracey Ryan used her passion for plants to create Bia Beauty a range of natural skin care products made from simple, effective edible ingredients. The Orange and Grapefruit Exfoliant Cleanser is a fantastic multitasker, it contains castor and thistle oil which are excellent at cleansing and extracting impurities with natural jojoba grains. It also combines these with orange blossom water and orange and grapefruit essential oils to create invigorating and delicious smelling exfoliant and cleanser. My skin felt refreshed and revived without the tight feeling that some more industrial exfoliators can leave.
The Mellow Mandarin Moisturiser also includes that yummy vitamin packed citrus smell. Prices start from €4.95 and a range of stockists can be found at www.biabeauty.com.

BIA BEAUTY

Girls and women tend to spend more time on Facebook than men so products aimed at a female audience have to have Facebook on their marketing agenda. Bia Beauty, with 1250 Likes, produces a range of 100% natural skincare products. Edible ingredients such as cocoa, coconut, herbs and spices are used to make moisturisers, cleansers, creams and scrubs. According to founder Tracey Ryan: "If you can't eat it, we don't put it in the skincare."

The Bia Beauty founder seeks to engage her online audience as often as possible. "Facebook helps me massively. Customers leave comments all the time so I collect all my testimonials there. It's a fantastic way for people who have bought the product and have enjoyed it to share that fact with other people." says Ryan.

Bia Beauty's owner thinks that jumping head first into Facebook is the best way for a business to get started. "Don't be afraid to post something. Just get out there and say it." she urges.

Eco Products at Irelands Pregnancy and Baby Fair

DETOX BODY SCRUB (€19.95) BY BIA BEAUTY

Today I went along to Ireland’s Pregnancy and Baby Fair at the RDS.

I love this show and I think that Claire and Jen have done an amazing job to bring this standard of event to Ireland. It was lovely to see all the babies and bumps there, enjoying the day and even finding some bargains. What was also lovely to see was the wide range of Eco Baby products at the event.  I saw Earth Mother and Eco Baby both with stands there.

I saw stands selling: Burts Bees Baby Range, Weleda Baby Range, Trilogy for Mama, Ecover and all other manner of Eco Products at the event. I was also delighted to spot Irish made Bia Beauty there too. This Cork based company makes creates handmade beauty products from scratch and is 100% Irish. I was tempted by almost everything on show – from the beautiful exfoliators to body creams but I couldnt resist a cute little tin of lip balm – chai latte flavoured! Yum!

BEAUTY SPOT with Mary O' Donnell

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Tracey Ryan from Cork and I found her to be a very gentle, soft-spoken lady who is passionate about her work. Tracey, who studied herbal science at Cork Institute of Technology, had the idea of combining food and skin care and thus Bia Beauty was born. She uses nuts, seed oils, fruits, herbs, spices, cocoa and avocado butter to the skin. The media lover her because she ticks all the boxes, Irish, natural products and purse friendly. Ireland AM and Expose regularly features Bia products.

Her mother and baby gift set is a hero product, a perfect gift if you know any expectant mums. It has body butter and eye gel for mum and natural baby cream which has calendula oil, aloe vera and shea butter all of which are safe for baby and luxurious for mum. I bet Amy Hubberman received one and that Pippa O' Connor Ormond will also get one. New to the range is mellow mandarin moisturiser (try saying that fast) and my favourite orange and grapefruit facial exfoliant and cleanser. There is no need for a separate cleanser and exfoliant, which makes this product a multi-tasker and time saver. It is powerful but gentle and at 16.95 good value for two products in one.
